  • The official currency is the US Dollar. This means payments into Ecuador can be done relatively easily.

  • People entering Ecuador will be allowed to stay in the country for up to 90 days with a valid passport.

  • In order to leave and reenter the country without limitations a permanent resident visa is required.

  • Once the visa is obtained, an assignee cannot leave from the country for more than ninety consecutive days within the first year. After the second year of residency, the limit goes up to eighteen consecutive months.

  • In Quito, distances are short but traffic is high so the time to get from point A to point B is often more than what it would seem.

  • Quito is located at a high altitude and some people experience altitude sickness when they initially arrive in country.

  • Not every landlord will require the company to serve as guarantor. It’s up to each landlord however this will help in finding more property options.

  • The security deposit is usually 2 month’s rent.

  • The landlord pays the rental commission, which usually one month’s rent + VAT.

  • If the rent is paid by the company, there is an 8% tax the landlord needs to pay which is usually added to the rent.

  • Security is a big issue, it is best to check with the transferring corporation what safety guidelines they have.

  • Good areas include San Francisco and Valle Arriba.

  • Many assignees get house keepers when they move to Ecuador. The assignee must register as an employer in Ecuador in order to do so.
