  • Official Currency: PYG (Paraguayan guaraní )

  • Once an assignee enters Paraguay with a visa, they must register at the local police station and home country consulate.

  • In order to obtain the Paraguayan ID or Cedula de Indentidad, aresidency permit is required.

  • A foreign driver’s license can be used to drive in Paraguay for up to 1 year. Once the Paraguayan ID is issued, the local driver’s license can be obtained. The licenses is good for up to 5 years but must be punched every year.

  • Opening a bank account can be challenging for an assignee, the required documents are a copy of the Paraguayan ID card, copy of the work contract, and copy of the passport. Using the bank the company manages their accounts with may help facilitate this process.

  • Public schools are not recommended in Paraguay, most assignees choose private schools; however, there are limitations on availability.
  • The length of a lease is 12 months.

  • Usually the rent is paid in USD however some landlords may require payments to be made in local currency.

  • The security deposit is usually 1 -2 month’s rent depending on the landlord.

  • The landlord and tenant are responsible for the commission which is usually 1 month’s rent. The landlord pays 50% and the tenant pays 50% + VAT

  • Most landlords will accept the diplomatic clause.

  • Utilities are not usually included as part of the rent and costs vary depending on family size and usage.

  • Paraguay is considered a “difficult market” for assignees because of some particular characteristics of houses. The houses, generally seem dark inside; a lot of wood is used in construction, and because Paraguay is very hot most of the year, the houses have wideporches, shutters and tinted windows to make the houses cooler. Older houses generally are not well maintained and are often ruled out. Newer houses and apartments are significantly more expensive, and have smaller gardens. The areas where affordable, desirable rentals are located are very limited, because neighborhoods in Asuncion are not homogeneous.
