Venezuela is one of the countries with the highest biodiversity’s worldwide, currently ranked in seventh position for the greatest number of species. There are habitats ranging from the Andes in the west to the Amazon Basin rain forest in the south via extensive plains, the Caribbean coast and the Orinoco River Delta in the east. It is also considered one of the countries with one of the largest known oil reserves and is currently a member of the OPEC. Venezuela is also one of the top exporters of agricultural commodities such as coffee and cocoa. The largest city and capital is Caracas in the Capital District.

  • Official currency: VEF (Venezuelan Bolivar)

 

  • Venezuela is a Currency Restricted Country, which means that only local currency can be used in country.

 

  • The local documentation needed is the Venezuelan ID (Cedula de Identidad) and can be applied for once the visa is received.

 

  • In order to obtain a local driver’s license, the Venezuelan ID is necessary.

 

  • It may be challenging to open bank accounts in Venezuela. Banco Mercantil can be more flexible and provide an easier solution for opening bank accounts.

 

  • Public schools are not recommended in Venezuela and most assignees choose private schools; however, there are limitations in the availability in the private schools.

 

  • Typically, the length of a lease is 12 months but can be negotiated for more if needed.

 

  • It is not mandatory to have a visa for the assignee to sign the lease contract if the contract is not notarized.

 

  • If the company does not serve as guarantor, landlords usually require a deposit, which is typically 3-month’s rent, as a payment guarantee and the employment letter.

 

  • Security deposits are mainly required if the company does not serve as guarantor; the deposit can range from three to 4 month’s rent.

 

  • The commission is usually 1 month’s rent + VAT and is paid by the tenant and the landlord.

 

  • Most landlord’s will accept the diplomatic clause after the 1st year.

 

  • All leases must be negotiated in Bolivars and can only be paid in local currency.

 

  • Utilities such as electricity, phone, and internet remain under the landlord’s name; however, the landlord will cover the water expense.

 

  • Cable is the only service that goes under the tenant’s name. DIRECTV is the most common provider.

 

  • In Caracas there aren’t any temporary apartments. For temporary stays, it is necessary to make a reservation at a hotel. Eurobuilding and Lidotel are the most recommended.

 

  • The areas where affordable, desirable rentals are most likely to be located within Caracas are Colinas de Valle Arriba, Colinas del Tamanaco, Lomas San Román, La Castellana, Palos Grandes, Sebucán, Los Chorros, Lomas de Chuao, Lomas del Mirador, Colinas de La Alameda, Mirador de Los Campitos.
